For most projects, the application process should start when the grounding system of a project is installed. A witness sign off on the grounding system is required for all certifications where the grounding is a part of the scope.

An LPI-IP inspection certificate gives owners, architects, engineers, etc. peace of mind that the lightning protection system installed on a building is done correctly per national safety and trade standards. If a system is not installed correctly, it could do more harm than good.

There are three different applications to choose from for the LPI-IP. The most common is the Master Installation Application and applies to most stand alone structures. However, if the structure is connected to another structure via a walkway, canopy, etc., all connected structures must be protected with one lightning protection system in order to be eligible for the Master Installation Certificate. If this is not the case, then the Limited Scope Inspection is the only other option.

In order to provide a more thorough inspection program, the LPI-IP requires that “typical” photos be submitted with every application. For most projects, this means a close up photo and a photo a few steps back to show where the object being photographed is installed in relation to the structure. Each of the typical grounding electrodes (e.g. ground ring, ground rods, ground plates, etc.) and concealed portions (e.g. down conductors, roof penetrations, etc.) of the lightning protection system must be documented. This will require special coordination between the LPI-IP office and the contractor. Please contact us for these type of projects as early in the project as possible.

In order to get a full certification with surge suppression, photos of the surge protection device must be taken showing the device installed on the electric panel, telecom system, etc., including it being wired into the panel or system. Cut sheets of the devices must also be submitted to verify the device conforms with the standard being used for the inspection.
